Biogas system operates optimally at temperatures above 17°C. The ideal process temperature for the fermentation process is at about 35°C. In a warm African country, the higher ambient temperatures (typically 25–30°C or more year-round) create ideal conditions for anaerobic digestion. This means: Faster microbial activity, Higher biogas yield, More stable gas production year-round.
Each kilogram of food waste can produce approximately 200 liters (0.2 m³) of biogas, sufficient for more than a half hour of cooking over a high flame. For conversion: 1m³ biogas is equivalent to 0.46 kg LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), and 1m³ biogas typically yield around 2kWh of electricity. The biogas-to-electricity yield depends on the efficiency of the generator or combined heat and power (CHP) system used.
A 5-person household using biogas for cooking and heating might need around 1.5 to 2.5 m³ of biogas per day, depending on their cooking habits and other uses. 5 kilogram of food waste a day can produce approximately 1,25 m³ of biogas, sufficient for about three hour of cooking depending on stove efficiency and flame intensity.
